LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

November 2002

We start this rendition of a real course with a field of mowed tee boxes, mowed fairways without a first cut, checkerboard greens with a fringe, all normal shades of green for the average golf course but the rough is a very dark green which almost makes it look like a fantasy course. Don't draw the same conclusion I did, it turns out to be a fun course. The many pines and fir trees with their heavy undergrowth look very attractive, we do get shadows but not as many as you think that you should with such a heavy growth. Not enough 'assigned top views', I think so. A strip of asphalt decorated with rocks, flowers and plants runs throughout the course and even has an occasional bridge, a maintenance road? who knows but it gave me a good bounce once so it's a welcome addition. The water that we find here never did come into play in a serious way but it did make the course look quite nice. Homes, buildings line the mostly narrow fairways on many of the holes. The greens were leaning heavily toward the small side but generally were easy to hit.

The few bunkers that are present are hardly a deterrent to your game; they are small and mostly out of the way.

This course had extreme elevation changes, my longest drive was 341y and at times you have to work to get 268y. It was a very interesting mountainous course and didn't seem to be laid out as a course but it was a course built to accommodate the existing terrain and to take advantage of the many twists and turns, ups and downs. The work with the caddie was excellent; I didn't run into one bad call. The fairways as I said earlier were a bit narrow on most of the holes but they could be hit without to much of a problem. The greens were on the small side, not that difficult to play. They had some slopes but for the most part you have to watch the breaks and you can score some rather lengthy putts. If by any chance you miss the green and land on the fringe or even the rough it's a very nice chip to the cup.

This first effort by William turned out to be an enjoyable course, it's quite obvious that he is not completely comfortable with the APCD when you look at the bunkers and the lack of a custom flag tells me that he didn't take advantage of the designer corner or run this course by a few beta testers. He did work very hard on the course; this shows with the small details and with the addition of the many homes that he had both showing and partially hidden by the trees. He is the type of designer that with some help by a few of our more professional designers seems to be able to be capable of building a 'fun' course but not a perfect looking course on the style of a Spyglass. Some beta testing next time would make a world of difference in the overall appearance of this very playable course. I'm making it sound like it's a dog when it's not, it's a very acceptable looking and enjoyable playing course and I recommend it to you for a download. It's a small download and a fun play, enjoy it, I did.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
