LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

This Course set amidst a plain of dirt and surrounding countryside has an appearance that differs from most, and once begun playing, stands out from alot. Without wishing to raise hopes too high, this course begins to please with not only its visuals, but some of the holes make careful thoughts raise opinions. The more I played this course, the more I liked it.

The hole layouts, the planting, and the design elements stood out well on this course. Some may say that when designing a course or hole, you should be able to see the waiting traps. Municipal allows that element in most holes. The course isn't a very elevated one, but the holes play well. Some holes even appear to offer shortcuts, ie the 5th hole Par 5, but once ventured into the other fairway, you find your ball out of bounds. The 9th hole may catch you avoiding trees down the fairway, and opting for the large fairway to the left, again the OB sticks surrounding the marked areas will cause you further penalty.

The view on the tee's make this unique. The use of dirt has a nice appearance and gives a different look to the course. The flowers and scattering of many objects also make this a little more lifelike. It all goes very well together.

There were a few things here and there that I deliberately go out looking for. Bridges appear oversized, due to possible overscaling. The tree planted on the edge of the fringe on the 2nd green will make a few tough recovering shots harder than normal. Why is there a barrel behind the 7th green? The 11th hole has a few trees sunk below the surface by the path on the left of the fairway, causing some branches to appear to be growing through the path. The 13th hole has some trees growing out of the water. The 12th and 13th fringes show a few dark shadows where perhaps the mesh could clean up better. Some of the shapes used could be better shaped, removing a lot of the sharp look some have in the top view. These things, were looked for and don't really detract from the playing.

All in all, the course has to be ranked highly, it is a great addition to the Links range, and I'm sure the designer will be pleased with his work, as it will be received well I'm sure.

Designers Note: I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.

Chris Carpenter designed Gallup Municipal G.C. This is a mountainous course with lots of trees and some water and sand. Gallup rates right up there with Eichenried and Langolier G.C in my opinion.

This course not only looks fantastic, it played very well. You have to think, especially off the tee during your round at Gallup. This is a keeper folks so when it is available, GET IT! Great work Chris!!

Visuals: Looks awesome and what I really like is it looks natural with nothing out of place.

Off the Tee: Your tee shots at Gallup Municipal G.C. will make you put your thinking cap on many times. Do you lay-up into a safe driving area or do you take a change and hit thru a dogleg or onto a narrow fairway surrounded by water, sand trees or all three. On hole #3, you can even shoot to a safer fairway on another hole instead of taking a chance with the #3 fairway. Just a great design IMO.

The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Gallup Municipal G.C. are not too tough as long as you make the right decisions on the tee and can execute. You will have slight to moderate slope on a few fairways but they can be managed.

Putting: Putting is easy to moderate at Gallup Municipal G.C. Pin placements seem to be well thought out as well and can test you.

Great work again Chris and I really hope you are working on another one right now.
