LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Mat Leclair

October 2002

After playing the course twice, I found very few technical errors on the course. I saw no bad shadows and very, very minor errors throughout the course. I thought that it wasn't too bad of a course. It may have been a first try, nor sure but if it was, the course was quite well done. The only things that I thought could have been done better were the mappings. Many of the walls surrounding the lakes had the wood face to them but looked unmapped. That really isn't that big of an issue though. Overall, a well created course with not too many errors.

When I first took a look at the course, the textures surprised me. I thought that they were very dark, but fitted with the overall look of the course. Nice job with that one Roger. The holes were relatively straight and I thought that some could have had a slight bend to them. The bunkers were sort of plain and looked a little indifferent around them with the rough edge when they were in the fairway. The greens were very similar to each other, and sloped similarly. The hazards were done fairly well. Almost all of them had a wood wall bordering them, although they were not mapped, it was still nice to see some of that. Creativity is a major part when designing a fictional course and I think that with a little more time and more planning this one could have done better creatively.

Playability is a major thing when I play courses, especially fictional or imaginary ones. They have to provide an enjoyable round while being fair. I haven't seen many courses come up on the 'unplayable' side of what I think. Coconut Grove certainly was nice to play and was very fair from my standpoint. I thought that the greens had just enough slope to make you think more about what you were doing. The greens were a little on the flat side but played very well. The only thing hat I though could have played better were the fairways. They had almost no slope to them. Nearly every time I found the fairway, I had a flat lie. In my opinion, I thought that made the course play even easier than it already was. Overall, the course played a little easy and wasn't too much of a challenge.

There were a few extras that I noticed throughout the course, but only a few. On most holes there was a ball washer and a sometimes a small restroom or some other thing like that. I didn't see any cart paths or any clubhouse. These things gave the course a few more points because it added to the realism of the course. In my opinion, if a course has no cart paths, and no additions but the holes and some trees and undergrowth, then it just doesn't seem real. It is just like the course popped out of nowhere and had no planning to it. This course needed some more time to be worked with.

Overall, I think the course needed some more time. There were some things that I though could be improved upon such as making cart paths or adding slope where it is needed. The playability was somewhat good and could be worked upon a little more and adding some more extras could make the course feel like a real course.
