LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Ian Downs

I was pleasantly surprised to find this course something unexpected. Set in open parkland, the course boasts some great views and hole layouts. A real challenge is certainly offered.

The tees initially give you something to look at, showing the fairway texture with a nice cut look. Fairways have a good fringe around them and they vary in width as the course dictates. A few streams separate a few lakes, and very careful attention must be paid to tee shots where bunkers await even an accurate shot, with the wrong club. The bunkers are done well and sunken, can give you a hard time picking where to place the resulting shot.

Some hole layouts where good. A challenge to be accurate and even so, you may find the 2nd shot leaving more than bargained for. On the 11th, there was a great cluster of bunkers, also set amongst some small hills that had a great Links feel to them. Many fairways had slopes that will cause many, a challenge to get the direction of your shot just right. The view to the 12th was awesome and made for a great hole.

A few points perhaps to note for the designer, and maybe for reference to others: The 3rd hole par 5 left a shortcut option that I found, by aiming for the right fairway with a lofted 4w. This gave me a great 2nd shot in to the green for perhaps an easy eagle with accuracy. The work gone into taking many around several bunkers the right way, being a little wasted. Perhaps a taller tree would help. There were some rocks on the 2nd hole too that were named rocks10. An oversight I guess. One thing that did beg me to ask myself a question was the 10th hole bunker, with a fringe as the border. Now, there have been a few seen I know, but the vastness of this bunker would perhaps have made it different to border it would a rough terrain. Some green bunkers could also have benefited, in my opinion, on that 3rd hole mentioned earlier, with a rough outer ring instead of heavily sloping fairway. If I may also point out having the mountains on the 14/15th holes as non-playable areas would have given a few shots cause for concern. And only as a visual for the stream between the lakes on the 17th, some rocks would make the stream waterfall a better transition between the running water and water terrain. It would hide that seam that these two terrains simply hate blending together with.

Doug Jensen's thoughts..

Steve Pope is the designer of Fire Fighters Memorial. Fire Fighter Memorial is a Park Style course with the usual trees, sand and water. Objects such as flowers and fire fighter apparatus is also present in this course. This course is awesome so download it now. Fire Fighters Memorial was tough but fair and the design was very good and polished.

Visual Rating: 8

Fire Fighters Memorial is very nice visually. One of the best

Playability Rating 8

Fire Fighters Memorial is very tough. You will find many times during your round where you will have to think before you take your shot to avoid disaster. You will be tested as I was during your round at Fire Fighters Memorial.

Awesome course Steve. Good luck with your next design.
