LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Avalon Coast

A beautiful course starts off with the tee boxes, mowed fairway, rough, checkerboard greens and fringe all looking good together but no fairway first cut and a little sloppy, no fringe on hole #2 green. No custom flag from the designer who gave us Talon Ridge? The course is a little bare at the tee areas (great bench) but the course is only 16.5mb a bargain size with all the huge courses coming out today. His selection of trees is very impressive, I like the twisted look and the wild grass undergrowth with the yellow seeded into it looks exceptionally nice, in Southern California we see that at some road sides and call it mustard plant. His bunker work is very good and complements this beautiful seaside course. The fairways are ample and not well guarded by bunkers but when you have the ocean and cliffs to contend with, bunkers are the least of your problems. The greens are more than undulating, they are a mass of small ridges and hills but are surprisingly easy to navigate. They are quite small and usually well guarded but the putting could have been made just as “difficult” with breaks than with the strange looking ripples that he used. All in all the greens weren’t that hard to putt, I would put them in the very low moderate range, they were fair and fun. The holes showed great imagination and the course bordered on the fantasy but I would never call it that, it’s a fictional course and plays like it.

The elevations he used throughout the course worked and so did the caddie. Hole # 4 par 4 was one of a few double fairways, I played it to the right fairway, over the water instead of choosing the safe left one, its much more fun.

This is a very beautiful course, and it’s an enjoyable course to play. With its unusual hole shapes and strange small greens I found it to be a fascinating course. We unfortunately don’t see to many courses like this, the talks on the weboards were comparing it to The Bluffs at Ocean Point. Its in the same genre but completely different. Because of its pure enjoyment and many challenging holes I wholeheartedly recommend this small download to you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
