LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Aitch Heath Municipal 92

Part of the readme:

A fictional rendering of a real course.
7130 yards from back tees, 5880 yards from ‘real’ tees.

Aitch Heath is a Links rendering of a real course - Hounslow Heath Municipal, as I remember it from 1992, when I last played it.

It is fictional for 2 main reasons:

1 - it is rendered entirely from memory and thus is unlikely to be accurate even to the course of 1992.

2 - at a little under 6000 yards Hounslow Heath would not represent much in the way of a challenge to any computer golfer.

I wanted to create a real course however and so I made the forward tees accurate to the real course (in terms of length), and then invented back tees significantly further from the greens in order to make a course playable in Links.

Further to the above I moved and added bunkers to spice things up a little, but not so as to change the character of the course.

Anyone familiar with Hounslow Heath can decide how successful I’ve been in terms of replicating the look, feel and game strategy issues of the original.

‘Fictionalised’ it may be, but Aitch Heath is when all is said and done an attempt at creating a real course as I remember it, and thus you won’t find as many risk/reward play options as on totally fictional and re-creations of championship courses.

Fans of real courses will hopefully understand the liberties I’ve taken and are invited to try the course from the forward tees if they want an experience closer to reality.

The grasses at Links type courses are supposed to blend together and form one big grassland, his tee boxes, fairways with a first cut, rough, greens and fringe did just that and very well, a beautiful job of designing. This links course had quite a few more trees than does the normal courses that we’ve seen and it makes it more enjoyable to see and to play. The “trodden path” could that be where the many players here have eventually worn the grass’s down walking the course, I want to believe it is, interesting terminology and an attractive realistic addition. The cityscape pano with the aircraft overhead both visually and in the many sounds that run through this course make for an added attraction.

The elevation changes are enjoyable and your chances of cutting across many of the holes because of the trees, which are few and low, will greatly add to your birdie statistics. The fairways were less than medium and the greens were more towards the easy side with their gentle breaks. The bunkers few in number also proved to be a plus for safe play here. On the back nine the ever present creek seemed to makes itself known but as with the bunkers didn’t really interfere with play.

Hole # 14, par 4, 390y, a dogleg right with a stream crossing the fairway at about 300y. I cut across the trees and landed just short of the stream, 297y. A quiet little corner of the course with the stream and a small bridge but onward with my 79y second shot to the flagstick.

This is a beautiful and interesting course to play and its beauty only adds to the enjoyable time you can have here. It’s not a difficult course but don’t expect “a walk in the park”, the course is well made and the holes do have quite a bit of imagination to them. The play may not be the most challenging under my conditions but it is one of “those” courses that shouldn’t be allowed to fall through the cracks. This is a definite download and a nice keeper, I recommend it highly.
